It was not until BBWS invested in the redevelopment of alum-tawed pigskin in 2006-7, that the world could once again acquire the genuine article. Since the unveiling of our alum-tawed pigskin (and other alum-tawed skins) one or two other firms have tried to copy our success, but have failed in their efforts. This is because BBWS alum-tawed leathers are made in the truly historic, centuries old fashion, we encourage you to accept no other alum-tawed leathers than those bearing the official seal of Bookbinders Workshop & Franz Hoffmann-Stuttgart. This seal assures you that this leather has been manufactured in a pure, historically authentic approach, and that you have received the world’s finest.

The dynamics surrounding Bookbinders Workshop taking the innitative to develop/ redevelop alum-tawed pigskin (as well as other alum-tawed leathers) was very fortuitious for the craft of bookbinding. This is because BBWS, itself, required thousands of square feet of this leather for the binding of The Lost Gutenbergs. Under regular circumstances, to develop/redevelop any obscure or rarely used leather would be a very poor business decision for a leather merchant, especially if the only goal was only to resell it.
