The word Rind means Cattle in German.
It was Mr. Franz Hoffmann (himself, a fine bookbinder during the early
to mid 20th century) that developed Hoffmann's Rind Leather for Bookbinding.
Pure Vegetable-tanned.
Hoffmann's Rind Leather for Bookbinding is
a very specially made leather from cattle/bovine that is, believe it
or not, an outstanding bookbinding leather. It is thin (0.68
to 0.72 mm), the 'hand' of this leather is soft, yet very stable.
Many famous European libraries have regularly employed Hoffmann's Rind
Leather in their fine restorations and period-style bookbindings since
1930!!! But because Hoffmann's never really marketed themselves too
much outside of Central and Eastern Europe this leather (as well as
most of the line) was practically unknown the rest of the world!
Hoffmann's Rind Leather for Bookbinding was,
until 2010, available only in dark brown. BBWS has worked very closely
with Hoffmann's to now offer this outstanding leather in a
range of "Restoration Colors." Although with orders of 500
square feet, or more, ANY color can be custom made.
This leather has an 80 year pedigree in Europe, and once
you use it you'll never want to be without a few skins in your workshop!
PRICE: $19.90 per square foot.
