The
Michael L. Chrisman Exhibition of Medieval & Renaissance-Style Bookbindings
at The Gutenberg Museum (Mainz, Germany) is the first exhibition of
its' kind. To mark this historic and very unique event, a beautiful
solid Merlin-Gold medallion was custom minted, and was unveiled at the
exhibition opening on October 28th, 2010 at the museum.
The obverse (front) of the medallion is an original (copyrighted) artist's
rendition of Johann Gutenberg (later in life) looking back over his
right shoulder at himself and his apprentice standing at the printing
press, inspecting a printed sheet of his famed bible. The words in the
center of from Gutenberg himself, and are from the colophon of his 1460
printing of Catholicon. It is, essentially, his one sentence summation
of his accomplishment in bringing books from manuscript to printed production.
The reverse (back) of the medallion commemorates the installation of
the historic year-long exhibition of Mr. Chrisman's Medieval & Renaissance-
Style bindings.
The beautiful floral motif wreathing the obverse (front) of the medallion
was inspired by the ornate floral flourishes found on so many of the
leaves of the Gutenberg Bible in Fulda.
Again, the artwork was created especially for this medallion by the
artists at Northwest Territorial Mint, and will only be seen on this
medallion.
By a special arrangement, Bookbinders Workshop is very pleased to be
able to offer these three-inch diameter, quarter-inch thick (heavy)
medallions, but only while supplies last. Just one-hundred (100) minted.
Each medallion is marked "Made in the U.S.A." and individually
numbered.
BBWS has put together a "Chrisman Commemorative Set" which
includes One (1) Medallion & One (1) Autographed, First Edition
of "The Lost Gutenbergs" pictorial history, 2010 for just
$195.00
