OLD MASTER Leather Conditioner

6oz / 190ml  $19.95

The Amish know full well the importance of good leather care because their leather goods are subjected to all types of weather.

As an Amish bookbinder, I formulated a leather conditioner that not only preserves & protects but also kills and prevents mold & mildew.

OLD MASTER Leather Conditioner is made with pure top-quality natural oils with NO waxes or chemicals.  The results are a smooth, creamy, non-sticky texture.

There is no other product like this available anywhere.

NOTE:  When applying to leather book bindings, apply sparingly, and take care to protect the text-block by wrapping in waxed paper, or similar protective wrap.

STRIPED HEADBANDING CLOTH – Historical Period-Style

3-feet long by 2-inches wide    $12.95

100% cotton brown-beige striped cloth is a perfect selection for headbanding most publishers bindings from about 1830 to 1880. The BROWN stripes are 1/8th inch wide, and the BEIGE (dirtied white look) 3/32nd inch wide.  NOTE: This would not be appropriate for very thin books.

AN HISTORICAL NOTE: In examining many original examples, we see that David Fanshaw (a printer and binder for the American Bible Society) used this type of cloth from the late 1820s and into the 1840s. Jesper Harding of Philadelphia used a similar cloth between about 1835 and 1850.  Such striped cloth was the basic shirting material of the day. This same type of cloth (but in a broader range of colors) was used by American publishers well into 1880's.

Our cloth has a beautifully thin weight and is HISTORICALLY ACCURATE to the time-period.

GRAINING PALLET

89.99

NEW !   Hoole's Restoration Series GRAINING PALLET is not engraved but rather has been specially cast from an original late-18th century pallet, and is mounted into a solid wood handle.

The graining pallet is used by bookbinders, primarily to impart a grained surface along the outer hinges of leather bindings.  This is done to mimic the creasing and crinkling along the hinge that would naturally come with many years of active use.  Made exclusively for Bookbinders Workshop by Hoole Machine and Engraving Works, our GRAINING PALLET will give historic character and finesse to your restoration and period-style binding work.

Important Note:

Modern verions of the ancient graining pallets are regularly made in other countries, but they lack the most critical point of the tool. The engraved grain of those other versions are too flat and do not taper properly from the face of the engraving, thus creating a harsh impression. Hoole's rounded profile is much more subtle and forms the leather into a more natural-looking grain. When the impression of Hooles' Restoration Graining Pallet is compared to these modern renditions, the evidence is quite clear.

EARLY 19th CENTURY-STYLE WOVE PAPER - Circa 1830-1840

order of 12 sheets

(21” X  15”) $26.00

This 100% Cotton Rag paper is made exclusively for Bookbinders Workshop and measures 21" X 15 ".  The grain runs the longest dimension.

The weight varies slightly between 3.5 and 4 point (about 70 gsm).  A beautifully thin, historically accurate paper.

This paper was custom-made exclusively for Bookbinders Workshop to historically correct specifications on a vintage Fourdrinier papermaking machine.  Bookbinders Workshop has been working with our supplier for nearly two years in order to perfect the recipe.  This paper is a pleasure to the touch and a joy to work with. It is a VERY special paper.  Because we are bookbinders and restorers ourselves, we knew exactly what we wanted - a GENUINE REPRODUCTION of early 19th century wove paper. No other "restoration" paper that we're aware of even comes close to this.  As binders and restorers, we have all tried for years to force incorrect papers into becoming correct  for use with this time period, but this is no longer necessary.
